New York, the most expensive city in America, is famous for its extremely cheap pizza parlours. The price of a pizza slice is only 1 dollar, and sometimes it can even be 99 cents. Pizza sellers admit that the cost of making one slice isn’t exactly $1 — in fact, it’s more than that. The question is, how can these sellers achieve profit in a $1 pizza retail? And what’s so good anyway about the cheap pizza?
A slice of pizza in New York is considered the cheapest food there. In the mid 1950s, a slice was about 15 cents in price. Because of the inflation, the price keeps increasing, from 75 cents to 99 cents or even a dollar. Seeing those pizza pictures above, some of you might think: “Ew! Such a disgusting piece of shit. No wonder it only costs a dollar”. I do agree that these $1 pizza slices do not look appetizing — they kinda do look like vomit. Revolting. The generic New York pizza doesn’t look like the wholesome pizza pans from Indonesia’s Pizza Hut, but you know what? Don’t be fooled by their unappetizing appearances. Some people fly to New York only to consume a slice of this $1 pizza, just because it tastes that good. A single bite consisting of melting cheese, tomato, and baked warm dough might also be the reason why people hype over a slice of New York pizza. Honestly, I’ve never been to New York (yet), so I can’t really picture its taste. I’m curious on why it’s so popular, though. One of the reasons might be the depiction on mainstream media which continuously show how finger-licking good this New York pizza is.
Percy, the owner of one pizzeria in New York (Percy’s Pizza), admits that he relies on the quantity of pizza sold and low rent price to achieve profit. If the rent price is about $15000, Percy won’t be able to sell his pizza for a dollar per piece. What about relying on the quantity of pizza sold: what does that even mean? Basically, to make up for the really cheap price of a pizza, the seller has to sell a hell lot of slices. Therefore, those pizza sellers in New York can eventually gain profit based on the cheap price point of a slice. So, is it quantity against quality now? Well, that’s not really the truth — pizza sellers, such as Percy, actually cares a lot about the quality of their pizza slices. For your information, most $1 New York pizza sellers buy their ingredients from a wholesale cash-and-carry food supplier called Restaurant Depot, where ingredients are mostly affordable. However, not every single ingredients for a pizza comes from Restaurant Depot, since owners usually add certain secret ingredients/seasoning in their 2 main raw products: cheese and flour. Due to this reason, $1 pizza slices from different pizzareas do vary in taste.
You might think, “1 dollar per slice isn’t that cheap! Here in Indonesia, we can get more pizza slices with way lower price!“. It’s true, but you must take into account that New York is one of the most expensive cities in the world (as I have mentioned on the first paragraph). A huge slice of good quality pizza that can fulfill your hunger for only 0.99 to 1 dollar? It’s a freaking good deal for everyone! Besides, these cheap pizza parlors all over New York also help feed homeless people. You see — despite being such an expensive city, New York harbors a lot of hobos, or homeless citizens. This phenomenon happens because job vacancies in New York are low while the living costs are ridiculously high, even for average-income citizens. Eating this cheap slice of pizza everyday does not guarantee you to still be healthy in 2040, though. Although it’s hella cheap, let’s just say… pizza is still considered a type of junk food.
